This small unnamed battery is situated on Stono River just north of Fort Pemberton on James Island. The date of construction is unknown, but it likely supplemented the guns of Fort Pemberton to defend the mouth of the Wappoo Creek and Elliott’s Cut from attack by Union gunboats. It is also possible that this battery dates to the Revolutionary War when British troops heavily occupied James Island in February to May 1780.
The South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust was granted a conservation easement on this site by the property owner whose home overlooks the battery.
